Growing up in a suburb but obsessed with the variety and texture of cities, and looking for a college in his native Canada, Pinchin selected Hamilton, Ontario, a post-industrial city that shares a latitude and a complex history with US rust-belt cities like Flint, Rochester, and Lackawanna. There is a trend among other urbanists and new topographers to favor technique and composition over emotion but, for Pinchin, photography is the purest way to capture the feelings that his discovered scenes evoke. Pinchin’s technical excellence and a painterly sense of color and design combine with his unique sense of place to give life to images in which there is not a person to be found. In every sense of the word, the photographer is present.
